Gold Necklace

This rare-artifact necklace holds an ancient coin from the artist's own collection. It is a large follis coin that measures approximately 1"dia. The follis was a type of coin in the Roman and Byzantine traditions. Probably minted between the first and third centuries, it has a lovely brownish-bronze patina.
Found in a hoard, these coins had been buried in antiquity for safekeeping. There they stayed for hundreds, even thousands of years, as their owners never retrieved them for reasons we can only imagine. Wouldn't you just love to know the stories these coins could tell?
The handcrafted solid 22k gold setting is an ancient-inspired design with an open back to make the reverse side of the coin visible. The chain is a 24 inch long and short design in 18k gold.
