Cerulean/Violet Piscine
Art Glass Sculpture
Created by
David Patchen
Inspired by the streamlined denizens of the marine world, this blown glass sculpture from Patchen's Piscine series is low, long and sleek with great three-dimensional optics. Crisp details and vibrant colors are hallmarks of Patchen's work - the result of his technical and creative mastery.
Created using the challenging cane technique, Patchen first stretches colored molten glass into long rods called 'cane'. Once cooled, the rods are cut into short lengths, arranged in a pattern, re-heated, and attached to a blow pipe to begin creating this work.
This one-of-a-kind piece features cane in shades of cerulean and violet, twisted together, and encased in thick clear glass to create this sleek sculpture. Piscine sculptures have great optics with a flattened profile (like a fish's form) and substantial as singles and perfect grouped in trios as a centerpiece.
