Kent Williams
"Using small pieces of fabric or computer-based pixels, I create dense, pattern-based works that explore the inexhaustible possibilities of line, shape, color, light, pattern, and landscape. Some of my digital works also explore the inexhaustible possibilities of life in a modern, industrial, technological society."
With works that contain hundreds, if not thousands, of discrete pieces, Kent Williams believes in the continuing power of geometric abstraction. His works use simple shapes like squares and rectangles, but he combines these shapes in such a way that simplicity is left far behind. Kent's purely abstract works pursue patterning ideas to their logical, if not illogical, conclusions. His less abstract works, using photographs that he slices into tiny pieces, pursue the age-old idea of beauty in a world that is changing at a faster rate than most of us can comprehend.
For his art quilts, Kent Williams uses commercial fabrics that he machine pieces and machine quilts. For his digital prints, he uses Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and photographs he takes himself.
Kent is largely self-taught. He has been making quilts for more than10 years. He has written about art for more than 25 years.
