Joe Lee
"I believe, in pottery, every piece is a test tile. Each pot is a chance to experiment and to innovate."
Joe Lee is interested in classical forms infused the intricate and unique surfaces. The pieces that he creates with carved geometric patterns open up a conversation between the object and the viewer in a language of colors, shapes, and designs that are both modern and historic in theme.
Joe prefers to throw vessels on a potter's wheel. After the initial making process, he carves the surfaces with intricate and dense geometric patterns. He has several main themes for his designs which he uses throughout his work.
Joe has a BA in Creative Writing from the University of Pennsylvania. It was not until later in life that he took some ceramic classes at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, CA, and found a new artistic outlet. He earned a Certificate of Ceramic Achievement at OCC. He has been doing pottery for 15 years; ten years working in clay as a hobby and five years working as a professional potter.
