Caleb Nichols

"Hours upon hours of of being on, or next to, the ocean. Messing about in boats on the water in its many forms. Deep blue windy whitecaps, angry stormy green pounding a rocky shoreline. Muffled fog on a sea of glass. Slight ripples in the shimmering sun. These and more are the attributes I use as inspiration for my glassworks."

Born in 1958 and raised in Massachusetts with a lifelong connection to an island in Maine, Nichols' education took him from Switzerland to New Orleans, where he first learned to blow glass at Tulane University. The parallels between glass and water were immediately apparent to him. In 1985, after working as a photographer for a few years, he founded Brimstone Glassworks in Stoughton, Mass. with a partner, Barry Entner, and has been a glass artist ever since.

In that time, he has been constantly honing his vision, with the belief that beauty in nature is universal and touches us all. He has created numerous large installations as well as individual sculptures for people and places worldwide. The ocean is a vast subject, and he never tires of exploring it.
